CRIMEAN CANNONS - WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

Market Place
later Cathedral
Ripon
Yorkshire

After the Crimean War a large Russian Cannon, captured at Sebastopol, was set in position in the Market Place, near the Obelisk, as a trophy of the Crimean War. The cannon was surrounded by a railing. There was also a drinking fountain erected Dec. 1873 by Captain J W Patterson R.N. in memory of his wife. The arrival of the cannon was celebrated with a military parade, speeches and ringing of the cathedral bells. The cannon was also fired. The cannon was placed by the obelisk in April 1858, moved to Kirkgate near to the Cathedral in 1896 and scrapped in World War II. The fountain was also removed in 1896.

Unfortunately we have been unable to locate an image of the Ripon Crimean Cannon yet. Let us know if you have one that we could use.
