CRIMEAN CANNONS - WHERE ARE THEY NOW?Guildhall High Street Cardigan Cardiganshire WALES Great Britain SA43 1JL Telephone: 01239 621765 After the Crimea War the town of Cardigan in West Wales, which bears the same name as the infamous general, was given a captured Russian field gun. It was finally installed in 1871 when it was placed in front of the Guildhall. The gun had been used in the 'Battle of the Light Brigade', during the famous charge at Balaclava. The 150 year old Cardigan Guildhall Market houses a cafe specialising in local produce and a wide range of goods, services, arts and crafts. In recent times, as a re-enactment of the charge takes place in the Crimea, the newly renovated gun became the centre of a smaller memorial event in Cardigan, attended by families whose ancestors took part in the Crimean war. The Robins/Hennessy database records an 18 pdr 18802 - 1823. In the picture the cannon rests outside the Town Hall while Earl Cardigan who led the charge of the Light Brigade adds his presence.
