CRIMEAN CANNONS - WHERE ARE THEY NOW?St. Nicholas Cliff Scarborough Yorkshire Great Britain YO11 2ET Picture right: By 1900, the cannon from Sebastopol was standing in the garden area at the front of the Grand Hotel. Located in the town centre and built in 1863, the Grand Hotel Scarborough takes pride of place overlooking the town's picturesque harbour and South Bay Some rather scathing comments were passed concerning the cannon at the start of the First World War. The Hartlepool populace had suffered enormous destruction from German shells and 114 civilians and soldiers had been killed. There was less propaganda value there than for Scarborough, where only 18 had lost their lives. After all, Hartlepool had several artillery battery defences and a naval port, whereas Scarborough was well known as a seaside resort with a derelict medieval castle and obsolete Crimea-war cannon. Unfortunately very little was heard of the cannon thereafter and it appears to be another cannon which was sacrificed for scrap during W.W.II.
