Right - The Chelmsford Crimean Cannon is shown in its former and present locations in the High Street and later in the park. Below the plaque reads Sebastopol 1855.

The Sevastopol Cannon is now found in Oaklands Park in Chelmsford. The carriage is not original, and was presented in 1858 by Major S.J.Skinner RA. This Cannon was hidden away to a corner of the park in 1937 after residing outside the Shire Hall at the top of Chelmsford High Street since 1858.

During WWI, when a German invasion was thought imminent, a gang of young lads endeavoured to load and fire the cannon as a symbol of protest. Fortunately it proved rusty and useless.
