CRIMEAN CANNONS - WHERE ARE THEY NOW?St Augustines Conduit Longton Canterbury Kent Great Britain CT1 1TF If you are exploring Canterbury wander towards Burgate. Pass through the city walls, cross the road and enter Longport. Follow the signs directing visitors to St. Augustine's Abbey. Look out for the water conduit set just beyond the sharp corner you turn to reach the abbey. It was a gift to Longport in the 19th century to help prevent cholera. This is an extremely unusual conduit because it is fashioned from cannon that saw action during the Crimea War. The picture shows the nearby water tap and stand, described as a conduit. This has been identified as a converted Crimean cannon, but recent expert advice is that this is not the case. This raises the question, is it the tap and stand or was it in the conduit or water pipeline system that connects to it that a Crimean Cannon was utilised in some way?
