CRIMEAN CANNONS - WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

Unalaska
Alaska
United States

Unalaska is the chief centre of population in the Aleutian Islands. The city is in the U.S. state of Alaska. Unalaska is located on Unalaska Island and neighbouring Amaknak Island off mainland Alaska.

Above is an early 1900's postcard showing a view of old Russian cannons at Unalaska, Alaska. On 30 March 1867 the United States of America took possession of Alaska after purchasing it from Russia, adding 586,412 square miles to its territory. These cannon may originate from Russian governance rather than the Crimean War.

Four small cannons in Sitka, which started out in Unalaska, stand in testimony to Alaska's former occupation by Russia and the subsequent transfer of Alaska to America. The Northern Commercial Company in Unalaska donated the cannons to the state of Alaska two years after statehood. The artefacts supposedly date back to the 1700s, when Lord Baranof ruled Alaska for Russia as its manager and governor.
