CRIMEAN CANNONS - WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

Town Hall
Devizes
Wiltshire

The Crimean Cannon at Devizes was presented in the late 1850s to the Corporation of Devizes by Lord Panmure, Secretary of War. It was displayed until sent for scrap during World War II.

The history of these cannon is recorded in a variety of ways. For example, witnessed by dozens of hussars who rode into battle during the Crimean War was Captain Heneage. His bravery was rewarded with the Victoria Cross. Born in Compton Bassett near Calne and buried there 70 years later in 1901, Heneage is one of 12 recipients of that august medallion with strong Wiltshire connections. The medallion was forged from the metal of Russian cannon captured during the Crimean War.
